Traditionally
when the “singing competition” finishes, the winning single is released a week
before Christmas and almost always tops the festive chart, however this year,
the X Factor final has been pulled forward by two weeks, to the 9th
of December, to allow someone else to take the spot.
Since
2004, the nation has been tortured by X Factor finalists like Shayne Ward and
Leon Jackson with their attempt to resurrect dead songs. Whatever happened to
great Christmas Number Ones like “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” , “Merry Xmas
Everybody”, “I Will Always Love You”, “2 Become 1”, “Mr. Blobby” and Bob The
Builder’s “Can We Fix It?” !?
Last
year’s winners, Little Mix, were number one in 2011, as Christmas Day fell on a
Sunday, but were knocked off the spot by the deserving Military Wives later
that same day.
The
X Factor’s Christmas chart topping streak was destroyed in 2009, when a group
on Facebook successfully campaigned for Rage Against The Machine’s Killing In The Name to be number one
(well done to those of you who joined the group), instead of Joe Mcelderry’s
tragic version of Miley Cyrus’ The Climb.
Producers of the show have decided to take the winner out of the race, although ITV’s schedule cannot be confirmed until nearer the time, so it’s possible that we may still be treated to ridiculousness of Rylan Clark’s rendition of “Baby One More Time” and “Mmm Bop” medley.
